Lhasa de Sela Youth Bursary Winner: Benny Winkelman Batchelor

From a young age, Benny was lucky enough to be surrounded by rich musical environments and many musicians. In first grade, he started taking piano lessons, but never got attached to playing the instrument. Shortly after, he started to be involved in musical theatre at the Segal Centre, and picked up the accordion, studying with one of his current mentors, Sergiu Popa. Once again, he did not feel attached to the instrument, and only towards the end of sixth grade, when he started playing drums did he get a strong feeling of attachment to an instrument.
